Life Jackets & Personal Flotation Devices

Life jackets save lives. Sailio requires that every vessel has an appropriate number of properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all passengers on board.

Before departing, verify that life jackets are accessible and in good condition. Children and non-swimmers must wear a life jacket at all times while on deck.

Check Availability: Ensure there is at least one life jacket per passenger, plus children's sizes if minors are aboard.
Proper Fit: Life jackets must be the correct size for each passenger — too loose or too tight reduces effectiveness.
Condition Check: Inspect life jackets for tears, broken zippers, or faded fabric. Discard any damaged flotation devices.
Wear Requirements: Children under 12 and non-swimmers must wear life jackets at all times on deck.

Weather Checks & Conditions

Weather conditions can change rapidly at sea. Always check the marine weather forecast before departure and monitor conditions throughout your trip.

If severe weather is forecasted — including high winds, thunderstorms, or large swells — reschedule your trip. A good captain knows when to stay in port.

Weather Warnings

Pay close attention to small craft advisories, storm warnings, and wind speed forecasts. Winds above 20 knots (23 mph) can be hazardous for inexperienced crews.

Forecast Checks

Use reliable marine weather services like NOAA, Windy, or local coast guard reports. Check the forecast at least 24 hours and again 2 hours before departure.

Crew Requirements

Having the right crew is essential for a safe voyage. Ensure that all operators are qualified, sober, and familiar with the vessel's systems and emergency equipment.

Qualified Operator: The boat operator must hold a valid boating license or certification as required by local regulations.
Sober Operation: The operator must not consume alcohol or drugs before or during the trip. A zero-tolerance policy applies.
Minimum Crew: Never operate a vessel alone unless it is designed for single-handed operation. Have at least one other responsible person on board.
Vessel Familiarization: Before departure, the operator should know the location of safety equipment, engine controls, fuel shutoff, and emergency procedures.

Emergency Procedures

Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. Review these procedures with your crew before departure.

Keep emergency contact numbers and radio frequencies easily accessible. In an emergency, stay calm, assess the situation, and communicate clearly.

Emergency Protocols

Establish a plan for man overboard, fire, flooding, and medical emergencies. Assign roles to crew members and conduct a brief safety drill before casting off.

Save the local coast guard, harbor master, and Sailio support numbers in your phone. On VHF radio, channel 16 is the international distress frequency.

Insurance Coverage

All boats listed on Sailio are required to carry valid insurance. Guests should confirm coverage details before booking and understand what is and is not covered.

Insurance protects both guests and owners. In the event of damage, accident, or injury, insurance provides financial protection and peace of mind.

Liability Coverage: Covers damage to third-party property and personal injury to others. Ensure the policy meets minimum local requirements.
Hull & Equipment: Covers damage to the vessel itself and its onboard equipment. Verify that the policy covers the full value of the boat.
Personal Accident: Provides coverage for medical expenses and accidental injury to passengers and crew during the rental period.
Proof of Insurance: Owners must provide proof of valid insurance. Guests may request to see the insurance certificate before departure.
